Gum packaging
A sustainable gum packaging
For this assignment, we collaborated in groups of four on a design competition presented by Metsä Board. The competition, titled 'Better with Less,' aimed at minimizing material usage in packaging, aligning with the goal of waste reduction. Metsä Board, a company specializing in the design and production of paper and cardboard packaging, is dedicated to replacing plastics with more sustainable paper materials. They define themselves as a 'Leading producer of premium fresh fibre paperboards.'
Our challenge was to innovate and create a sustainable packaging solution for an existing product within the parameters of the competition.

We initiated this project by conducting thorough research on our chosen topic, accompanied by creating quick sketches of various products that caught our interest. The concepts we found most appealing were sustainable packaging solutions for a take-away salad, gum packaging, and multiple pizza boxes. We continued refining our ideas through continuous sketching, ensuring our designs aligned with our vision and requirements.
After careful consideration, we narrowed down our focus to gum packaging. We believed that redesigning this product had the most potential and would yield a significant impact, particularly if the traditional packaging could be replaced with a more sustainable cardboard alternative.
We continued refining our product until reaching a consensus on the design presented in the first slide. This choice was based on our belief that it was the safest and most feasible to produce. Subsequent slides showcase the production method along with images of our physical model. After confirming that the model aligned with our expectations, we transitioned to 3D CAD for digital modeling. The final steps included rendering the design and creating a poster to effectively communicate our concept.
